Rep. Elik’s Capitol Update: Moving Bills, Homeschool Advocates, March Madness

It has been a very busy few weeks, here’s an update on some things going on around Illinois.

Rep. Elik Moves Five Bills Through Committee

Last Friday was the House Committee deadline, meaning our bills had to pass committee to have a chance to be voted on the House Floor later this Spring. I worked hard to pass 5 bills through committee:

  • HB 4867 builds upon a bill I passed last session to allow for more work vehicles to use green (along with amber) flashing/rotating lights to increase visibility and safety in active work zones.
  • HB 4868 updates the Nursing Home Care Act to clarify reporting requirements when something serious happens in a nursing home.
  • HB 4872 expands what counts as a qualified expense for 529 plans, allowing more special needs services to be covered by 529 plans.
  • HB 4934 creates a new sickle cell disease awareness license plate decal in Illinois and sets up a special fund to support sickle cell programs.
  • HB 5535 changes how drainage district commissioners can be paid in Illinois, providing for more local control.

Work continues on these and other bills, and I hope to see success in getting these passed out of the House soon.

Homeschool Advocates Visit Their Capitol

Rep. Amy Elik (R-Alton) welcomed homeschool students to Springfield this week, as the annual Homeschool Legislative “Cherry Pie” Day took place on Thursday, March 26, 2026. Rep. Elik addressed a large gathering of homeschool families at a rally held at the Illinois State Library.

Rep. Elik welcomed two House “Pages for a Day” to the Illinois House and introduced them to the Illinois House of Representatives during legislative Session.

March for Life

I was honored to be asked to speak at the Illinois March for Life. We had some local students and families in the huge crowd as we spoke about the sanctity of life and support for new mothers.

I-L-L!

The U of I Fighting Illini men’s basketball team is dancing into April! The Fighting Illini’s “Sweet Sixteen” tournament victory over Houston last Thursday put them into an “Elite Eight” matchup against their arch-rival Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday, who they stomped 71-59.

The Fighting Illini will play UConn in the Final Four on Saturday at 5:00.
