As the spring legislative session continues, House Republican lawmakers held a press conference at the Capitol to highlight the misplaced priorities of the House Democrat majority. With the state facing a $737 million budget shortfall for FY26, Assistant Minority Leader C.D. Davidsmeyer (R-Murrayville), State Representative Jennifer Sanalitro (R-Hanover Park), and State Representative Bill Hauter (R-Morton) took aim at recent Democrat-backed bills that fail to address Illinois’ biggest fiscal challenges.
Instead of working to ease the tax burden, Democrats are prioritizing radical and frivolous policies, including:
- A bill to legalize prostitution.
- A bill to give judges discretion in cases of first-degree murder for offenders under 21.
- A ban on grocery bags.
- Price restrictions on water bottles.
- Special protections for skunk and raccoon rehabilitation.
Meanwhile, Republicans have introduced real solutions to provide tax relief which would reduce the financial burden on working Illinoisans.
“While Illinois Democrats focus on misguided efforts like legalizing prostitution and rehabilitating skunks, they continue to neglect the serious issues plaguing our state,” said Rep. Amy Elik (R-Alton). “We will not back down in our fight for tax relief, safer communities, and stronger ethics laws, despite the majority party’s misplaced priorities.”
