Rep. Amy Elik Breaks Ground at Byway Discovery Center

State Representative Amy Elik joined local and state leaders to break ground at the site of the Byway Discovery Center at Piasa Creek.

On Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the community celebrated the new Byway Discovery Center which is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2026. The site is located along the scenic Great Rivers Road near Lockhaven Road. The center is expected to bring more tourists to the Riverbend and serve as a visitors’ center. It will include a gift shop, exhibit space, lecture facilities, and public rest rooms. The facility will be open seven days a week and is going to be staffed by the Great Rivers & Routes Tourism Bureau and community volunteers.

Rep. Elik spoke at the ceremony and shared excitement for the new project.

“This center will be a gateway to understanding the incredible cultural and historical stories that have shaped our communities along the Mississippi River,” said Elik. “From the early settlers to the vibrant river towns that thrive today, this region has always had a story worth telling. Let’s keep building up the Riverbend, shining a light on all of the things we have to offer.”
