Rep. Amy Elik passed HB1724 through the House this week. The bill aims to make the path easier to name roads after fallen heroes. Under current Illinois law, the “Heroes Way Designation Program” honors the fallen Illinois service members who were killed in active duty.
The “Heroes Way Designation Program” allows for heroes to be honored by naming a section of a state highway, bridge, or interchange after them if a resolution is adopted through both the Illinois House and Senate. Rep. Amy Elik’s bill came about after multiple resolutions passed the House but not the Senate, so the road naming was either delayed or dropped.
“This bill says that road naming resolutions only have to go through one Chamber,” Elik said. “This will make the process to honor our fallen heroes quicker and more efficient.”
Rep. Elik’s bill passed the House unanimously and now awaits action in the Senate.
