Rep. Elik’s Capitol Update

For this week’s update, I’ll discuss the HBIA/HBIS audit results, Relief for Working Families legislative package, what I’ve been up to around the district, and what’s coming up.

HEALTHCARE FOR IMMIGRANTS

Last year, I, through the Legislative Audit Commission, directed the Auditor General to conduct an audit of the Health Benefits for Immigrant Seniors and Adults (HBIA/HBIS), and the results were released and are alarming. As House Republicans predicted, the audit found astounding differences in the estimates of the program versus the actual enrollment and expenses. We must do better. Now is the time and this is the opportunity to work for taxpayers, not promote fraud and overspending.

See my floor remarks on this appalling audit here.

RELIEF FOR WORKING FAMILIES

Illinois working families face an unprecedented number of financial hurdles that a group of House Republican legislators want to help them overcome. The lawmakers unveiled a package of bills today aimed at providing much needed financial relief for Illinois’ working families.

The Relief for Working Families legislative package contains proposals which encourage entrepreneurship, help tipped employees keep all of their gratuities, and create opportunities for technical skill-building that can lead to high-paying jobs.

WHERE’S AMY

Lots of committee meetings in Springfield!

Speaking on the impact of the HBIA/HBIS audit findings.

I joined Governor JB Pritzker, Wieland Rolled Products North America, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, and other local leaders to break ground for the new, modernized Wieland facility in East Alton. Wieland’s $500 million investment in this project will keep hundreds of jobs in the Metro East and ramp up production.

There’s so many great things happening in the Metro East. I’m glad to welcome state and local leaders to the 111th district to celebrate Wieland’s bold investment and commitment to Illinois.

I was on a panel for the Mental Health & Addiction Legislative Forum. During the forum, we heard from professionals and individuals about mental health and addiction issues.

COMING UP

This Friday I am hosting Mobile Office Hours in Granite City! My staff will be available to help with issues you’re having with an Illinois agency. This event is free to attend and open to the public.
